Musical Director

Born in Oklahoma City and raised in Syosset, New York. Mr. Swerling began his musical studies in clarinet at age 6. While attending a cultural arts high school he was introduced to conducting and subsequently went on to earn his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Conducting and Clarinet with honors from the State University of New York, College at Purchase. After teaching music theory and chamber music at his alma mater for two years, Mr. Swerling attended Indiana University's school of Music in Bloomington, where he earned his Master's degree in Orchestral Conducting. Subsequent doctoral work led to both his appointments as assistant conductor of the Bloomington Symphony in 1987 and as the first Conducting Fellow of the Indianapolis Symphony in 1989. These positions led him to Danville, Illinois where, in 1990 he became Music Director of the Danville Symphony Orchestra. In 1993 he joined the Sacramento Symphony as Resident Conductor.

While with the Sacramento Symphony, Maestro Swerling conducted over 40 concerts and was instrumental in developing that orchestra's highly successful WORLD-VIEW series; a volunteer driven, multi-cultural concert series designed to involve members of various ethnic communities directly with their orchestra. His work at the Sacramento Symphony led him to his current position of Senior Vice President of Cala Records -- a London, UK-based independent classical recording label. Mr. Swerling manages all phases of Cala Records including sales, finance, marketing and production of over 100 titles.

In addition to his position with Cala, Maestro Swerling is the Music Director of the North East Texas Symphony, which he joined in 1998. He maintains an active international conducting career having lead orchestras such as the Janacek and Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestras in the Czeck Republic, Indianapolis Symphony, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Sacramento Symphony, Arkansas Symphony, North East Texas Symphony, Lafayette Symphony (IN), Danville Symphony (IL) and the Bloomington Symphony (IN).
